Using these Ingredients:

For the cake

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup/2 sticks of unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tbs vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/3 cup sour cream
  • 3 large eggs

For the frosting

  • 1 cup/2 sticks of unsalted butter, softened
  • 4.5 cups confectioner’s sugar
  • 1/3 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 2 tbs vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

For the flag

  • 1 pint fresh blueberries
  • 1 pint fresh strawberries
  • 1 ripe banana

Using this Method:

For the cake

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F and generously grease a 9” x 13” pan
  • Sift the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt into a large bowl or stand mixer.  Beat the ingredients together while adding the butter, vanilla, and ½ cup of milk. Mix until the ingredients are combined, the mixture will resemble a thick dough.
  • Whisk the remaining milk, sour cream and eggs together in a separate bowl.  Slowly add the egg mixture in 3 batches gradually to the stand mixer running on medium speed, scraping the sides after each addition until the batter has come together.
  • Pour the batter into the greased cake pan and bake for 30-35 minutes or until cake is baked through. Test doneness with a toothpick after about 28 minutes to avoid overcooking.
  • Allow the cake to cool completely before inverting onto a larger cake platter.

For the frosting

  • With a handheld mixer, beat the softened butter until creamy and add confectioner’s sugar, heavy cream and vanilla.  Beat on low for 30 seconds and increase speed beating for an additional 4 minutes.  If the frosting is too thin, add an extra ¼ cup confectioner’s sugar. If the frosting is too thick, add an extra tablespoon of heavy cream.  Frosting should be fluffy.
  • Spread the frosting onto the cooled cake in a thick layer using an offset spatula.

For the flag

  • Slice the strawberries and bananas into bite size pieces and set aside.
  • Beginning with the blueberries, add a section for the stars in the upper left-hand corner and outline the cake if desired.
  • Alternating the strawberries and bananas, add lines for the red and white stripes.
  • Slice and enjoy!
